Afternoon Tea with a Dash of Local Hisotry

  • Smith’s Castle’s popular Afternoon Teas continue on Sunday September 15 th at 4:00 pm. Mary Katherine Goddard (as interpreted by Marilyn Harris, Castle Docent) will host the event and share her memories of her mother, Sarah Updike Goddard, and her family’s contribution to the American Revolution. As owners and editors of the first Providence, RI newspaper, they helped to shape public opinion favoring the cause. Mary Katherine also has the distinction of being the only woman whose name appears on the printed and widely circulated Goddard Broadside, first copy of the Declaration of Independence to also contain the names of the signees. Guests will be served a selection of handmade freshly baked scones, tea sandwiches and pastry delights served with a choice of assorted teas. Seating is limited so to make your Afternoon Tea reservations, please call the Castle Office at 401-294-3521. Smith Castle members are free; there is a $10 suggested donation for others.
