In Westerly, R.I., find many reminders of yesteryear
By AAA member Carol Blatt

Westerly is a pretty town with character that invites you to shop in an old-fashioned way. Park downtown and walk along High Street where you’ll find some of Westerly’s best features: boutiques, galleries, cafes and antique shops.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Westerly Public Library and Wilcox Park: Maintained and owned by the Memorial and Library Association, the park’s beautiful grounds hold a number of monuments including the popular “Runaway Bunny,” well-known to preschoolers.

Ocean House: Follow Route 1A to Watch Hill, where this magnificent landmark is located. The refurbished Ocean House sits high on a cliff and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean House will remind you of a time gone by; I always think of “The Great Gatsby.”

Washington Trust Community Skating Rink: Ice skate downtown at Westerly’s new ice rink. Even if you do not skate, it’s a happy pleasure to watch the skaters.

WHERE YOU SHOULD EAT
Van Ghent Cafe: Cappuccino, espresso, 20 kinds of authentic Belgian waffles, crepes and sandwiches are served in a comfortable and friendly dining room. Look for the lace curtains in the window.

84 High Street: You will find a very broad menu here, a little bit Americano, a little bit Italiano. Try one of the grilled pizzas. And don’t miss brunch on the weekends.

Phil’s Marketplace: This is a great place to go to if you want to make a picnic lunch. You’ll find the ingredients for a memorable sandwich here, but you can also enjoy a sit-down meal.
