George Appointed to Scenic Highway Board
Myrna George, president of the South County Tourism Council, has been appointed to the state Scenic Highway Board. George's appointment was recently confirmed by the state Senate and announced by Gov. Donald Carcieri.
The board identifies, designates, promotes, protects and preserves scenic roadways which have valuable aesthetics as well as cultural, social and economic benefits to Rhode Island. Several of the scenic roads are located in South County, including Shannock Road, Ministerial Road, Route 1 in Charlestown and Ten Rod Road in Exeter.
The board works closely with municipalities to identify scenic roadways and ensure they are properly maintained. To consider a roadway scenic, the board looks for a combination of elements which create an unusually attractive, continuous and integrated traveling experience for motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians.
In her role as president of the tourism council, George is intimately aware of what makes South County such a unique and interesting place to live, work and visit. Our stunning roadways often serve as the gateway for visitors to our state.
George grew up in South County and served on the Exeter/West Greenwich School Committee, before her election to the House of Representatives. She has served as president of the South County Tourism Council for six years.
The South County Tourism Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the towns of Charlestown, Coventry, East Greenwich, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, West Greenwich and Westerly as a leisure travel destination.
