PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Islanders are lucky enough to have some of the best beaches in New England, according to Yankee Magazine.

South County's beaches are considered the best tourist destination in the region. The title has landed the cover of Yankee's July/August issue - a project that has been two years in the making.

The South County Tourism Council invited the magazine's editor to capture Rhode Island's southern belle. The article scoured more than 400 miles of beautiful sights, from Westerly to Wakefield, and everything in between.

"We are just delighted to see that they have graced their cover with the beauty of South County," said Myrna George of the South County Tourism Council.

The group hopes the article will attract some of  Yankee's two million readers. As it stands now, nearly three million people visit South County in the 12-week peak summer season. The tourism is a big help to Rhode Island taxpayers.

"Our visitors coming in to the South County area save each and every property owner $1, 349 a year in property tax.," said George.

The Yankee article highlights the hidden gems of Rhode Island's beautiful beaches, such as small trails and waterfront areas.
