Generations of families have vacationed at this historic (and recently refurbished) Victorian-inspired hotel set on a wide, sandy stretch of Rhode Island coastline. In summer, guests can be found building sandcastles on the private beach, taking a dip in the lap pool, playing croquet on the grassy lawn, or just lazing in a wicker rocker on one of the many verandahs. In cooler months, guided local winery tours, cooking demonstrations led by hotel chefs and an on-staff "food forager," and tours of the hotel's in-house art collection keep guests busy. There's also a 12,000-square-foot spa, complimentary afternoon tea, and four free activities included in the daily rate (including spa treatments and culinary classes). Off-property sights within walking distance include a crop of antique shops, the Watch Hill Lighthouse Museum, and the country's oldest carousel.
