ShamrocksFun Facts
Did you know that 16.66% of Rhode Island’s population claims Irish ancestry? That makes it one of the most Irish states in the country.

While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The three leaves of a shamrock are also said to stand for faith, hope and love. A fourth leaf is where we get the luck from.

While St. Patrick is celebrated as the patron saint of Ireland, he wasn’t Irish at all. He was born in Roman Britain and, at the age of 16, was kidnapped by Irish pirates and forced to tend sheep before eventually escaping.

The color green is now synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but originally, blue was the color associated with him. Green became the holiday’s signature hue due to Ireland’s lush landscapes, its nickname "The Emerald Isle," and its prominent use in Irish flags and shamrocks.

Another well-known St. Paddy’s Day symbol, the leprechaun, comes from Irish mythology. These mischievous little fairies are said to love causing trouble while fiercely guarding their pots of gold.
