Lodge
Humble Beginnings

The story of The Nordic begins with Karl and Irma Persson, immigrants from Sweden and Denmark, respectively. Moving to America during the economic downturn of the late 1920s, they settled in Brooklyn, New York. Their son, Richard (Dick) Persson, later married Gudny (Goody), a Norwegian immigrant, intertwining three Scandinavian cultures.

In 1963, the Perssons purchased a 28-acre property in Charlestown, envisioning a summer retreat complete with rental cottages, a dining hall, and recreational activities by a tranquil lake. They aptly named it the Nordic Lodge, reflecting their shared heritage. However, the venture faced challenges, including seasonal limitations and minimal publicity, making it difficult to attract guests.

A Culinary Transformation

The turning point came in 1980 when a nearby all-you-can-eat restaurant, Custy's, closed down after experiencing a fire. Recognizing an opportunity, the Perssons expanded their dining facility adopting the buffet-style concept. They emphasized high-quality, locally sourced seafood, including fresh Rhode Island lobsters, king crab legs, and prime cuts of meat. This shift was a hit with patrons, propelling The Nordic into the spotlight.
