Read MoreMary Shurtleff and her late husband, Leo, opened Shickasheen Farm in 1976. Originally they cared for race horses. After the race track was shut down they switched gears and - at the suggestion from a neighbor - they started growing mums. They grew the farm into a small garden center focusing primarily on annuals. Why Shickasheen? It's the name of the creek that runs along the edge of the property. "Shickasheen" is believed to be a Native American/Narragansett Tribe word for "great spring".
